Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer 5K

I signed up for this race really last minute, in fact I signed up on Thursday and the race took place on Saturday! But man am I glad I did it :) This was a really fun little race!

The 5k was hosted by the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) to create awareness about ovarian cancer, celebrate those who have survived and remember those who lost to the disease. I couldn’t think of a better reason to sign up or a better cause for the race dues.

The race was held at Kiwanis Park in Tempe – I grew up in Tempe when I was a little kid so it was so fun for me to visit this park again – I think it had been about 15 years since I was last there. I remember many fishing trips at the lake with my grandpa, swimming lessons at the pool and going to some of the events held at the park. I remembered a HUGE park so I was curious to see how much we would run through for the race – turns out its not as big as I remembered it to be and it was a breeze to run through it haha!

My friend Chelle and I decided to head over to the park early to get warmed up before the race. I was blown away at all the volunteers they had for this event. After we checked in and got our bibs and shirts we decided to walk around and check out some of the booths. We found a table hosted by a group of kids with a bunch of temporary tattoos – I had to stop and get one! They did a great job putting the tattoo’s on us and kindly took our photo – my poor friend Chelle was forced into taking this nerdy photo with me :) I somehow managed to keep my tattoo on for the remainder of the day and had a lot of people ask me about it, which was cool!

The race was set to start at 8:30 – a few minutes before we lined up and then we were off! There were actually a ton of walkers so we were able to start pretty close to the starting line. Of course as soon as the race begun, all the kids sprinted to the front :) We kept a nice leisurely pace for the first mile and a half of the race – I really enjoyed running through this park, the scenery is great and I really like the lake as well!

Around mile 2 I decided to break off from my friend Chelle and run a bit faster. I had a surge of energy and decided to push straight through until the finish. I would estimate that I passed about 25 people on my last mile. It was invigorating to pass people so quickly! As I rounded the last corner I decided to sprint to the finish – I was completely out of breath but it was well worth it! I finished in 32:02!

After Chelle passed the finish line we grabbed some water and a banana then headed home.  I had to get going since I had a long day ahead of me – I went over to my friend Crystals house to make some truffles for her wedding favors! After making 400+ truffles I was exhausted…but between the race and the truffle making with some of my favorite ladies I had a fabulous Saturday :)
