Appendicitis…

Hello friends!

Sorry I’ve been MIA for the past week – I had planned to do a little Valentines Day recap and share another Vday recipe with y’all but I got a little tied up with some health stuff that has had me a bit under the weather.

I ended up getting a bike for Valentines Day from Lance – and we went on a little ride to get fro-yo together. It was my first time on a bike in years so it was a fun easy ride to get back into it :)

When Thursday rolled around I really wasn’t feeling well, ended up leaving work early and stopping by urgent care due to some severe stomach pains. I got some not so pleasant news that it might be appendicitis, that sent me over to the emergency room at Chandler Hospital.

After a few hours of waiting, I got a CAT scan that confirmed it – Appendicitis - and got scheduled in for surgery. Luckily the surgery went well but I’ve got a bit of recovering to do. No lifting anything over 10lbs, no running, no swimming (for at least 10 days post surgery), and pretty much no strenuous physical activity at all..

IMG_0878Drinking some really gross contrast liquid before my scan – it tasted like 4 day old water that had lead pencils soaked in it

My first question for the surgeon was about how fast the recovery time was, and she told me it was rather quick since it was laparoscopic – and I’d be fine doing regular tasks just not anything like lifting 50 lbs. or “running marathons”.  No joke, I literally started crying.  I’m not sure why but everyone at the hospital uses this as a comparison, I guess they assume that people don’t actually run them that often? It was a bit of a sore spot for me since I’ve been waiting months for the NOLA half.

IMG_0879My first IV ever – and actually, this was my first trip to the hospital too

I had originally planned to run a 10k on Sunday (one that I have been looking forward to since November) but was informed that I would not be able to run it – I had actually convinced myself that I would just walk it since it didn’t have a time limit, but unfortunately it hurt to get off the couch let alone walk across the room so that ruined my plans – that and there was no way Lance was going to let me out of the house to do it!

Luckily I didn’t have to stay in the hospital long, I was released the morning after surgery (yay!) and got to eat my first meal in 27 hours…Pita Jungle has never tasted so delicious! And let’s just say there’s been a lot of Redbox movies and ice cream in my life the past few days.

I meet with the surgeon again in a week and a half to discuss my recovery. She said there is a possibility that I might be able to walk (maybe run/walk) the rock N’ Roll half marathon in New Orleans in two weeks. It’s upsetting to think about it, but I know I can walk it under the time limit – so that is my plan :) Won’t be my best time ever, but I’ll still get to participate and get the medal (and lets be real, that’s what it’s really all about..). After that I hope to get back on track with my Triathlon training – crossing my fingers that a few weeks of training will be enough to get me through!

So that’s what’s been going on with me! I haven’t been in the kitchen at all since I’ve been resting, but I’m going to try to get a few recipes up on the blog this week.  I want to thank you guys for your kind tweets, emails and texts – It’s really wonderful to have your support, it means so much to me!

  1. Oh girl, I am so sorry about New Orleans :( I'm glad you'll still get to at least participate, and that just means you have a little longer to get ready for that next 1/2 marathon milestone. You know what this means right??? We have to pick one and meet the 1:XX:XX time TOGETHER! I KNOW that if we were to do it together, we could both do it! Are you down???? Feel better, friend! I'm here if you need anything! Love you!!

  2. That water description...can I just say EWWWW! :(
Just focus on getting better for now.
I guarantee the New Orleans race may not (probably will not) be what you envisioned when you signed up but the NEXT event you put your money towards you will ROCK it extra hard! :)

  4. Aw, I hope you feel better!! Life sure does do its own thing sometimes, huh? You should do the Walk Run Wag 5K9 on March 4th! My pug, Ali, and I are doing the one mile walk/run (walk!!). You could bring your dog, if you have one, and still have fun even though you're only walking. You'll bounce back really quickly. Just think of this as a speed bumb :-)

  5. Boooo! Bad timing! I'm sorry you had to have this happen now, but it sounds like your trip will still be a good time, and thankfully it wasn't a more serious illness or injury! Heal up quick!
